There is a variety of activities for visitors to Labrador during summer and fall. These months are a great time to get outdoors and explore the natural surroundings. Numerous walking and hiking trails exist throughout Labrador, providing opportunities for a leisurely after-supper stroll or a more rigorous day-long hike.
Summer and fall months are also an excellent time to tour the local museums, historic places and many other Attractions throughout Labrador. With a human history that extends back some 9,000 years there is a wealth of things to learn about our ancient Aboriginal peoples and the explorers and settlers that came here during the last four centuries.
Highlighted below are just a few of the things you can do and see in Labrador during the summer and fall.

Whale Watching
Whales are frequently sighted along the Labrador coast during summer and early fall. The most common large species of whale is the humpback, usually seen in groups and noted for their classic roll and dive. Fin whales are more solitary, and are usually spotted alone or in small groups. Smaller whales found in Labrador waters include potheads and minkes and, occasionally, killer whales. Porpoises and dolphins are also common.
Iceberg Viewing
The Labrador coast is a terrific place for watching icebergs. Calved from glaciers in western Greenland, icebergs are brought south by the cold Labrador Current. As they enter (slightly!) warmer waters they begin to melt and roll, resulting at times in spectacular crashes.
There are many great locations along the Labrador for watching icebergs -- places where tides and currents bring the bergs near shore. While travelling in coastal regions ask the local residents to suggest some good viewing places.

Berry Picking
Berry picking is a popular activity for many Labrador residents during the summer and fall. Wild berries are used to make a variety of preserves and baked goods, or just eaten as they are (with a little cream or sugar) for a delicious dessert.

Berry-picking grounds are usually easy to access from most communities and from the highway as you drive along. A summer favourite is the cloudberry, known locally as the bakeapple. Resembling a large, plump, orange raspberry, bakeapples have a somewhat apricot-like taste. Labradorians pick many bakeapples throughout the summer, for personal use and to sell to commercial jam and liqueur producers. Your Labrador summer experience is not complete until you've picked at least one bakeapple!

In the early fall the ligonberries ripen. Called "redberries" and "partridgeberres" by Labradorians, these berries look like a dark red blueberry. They have a delicious, rich, tart flavour. Ligonberries make great preserves, and are also used fresh in baking. But they taste best when eaten by the handful while reclining on the Labrador barrengrounds under an immense blue sky. Try it sometime.
Geocaching
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt using a GPS. Participants follow GPS coordinates to seek out "geocaches", a waterproof container that holds a logbook and some small "treasure".
Geocaching is an excellent activity for Labrador's terrain and climate. Labrador provides geocachers with a wide variety of scenic and interesting cache locations throughout all regions.
