Fish & Game Species
Fish
The inland fish species found in Labrador are comparable to anywhere in the world. The rivers' unique strain of wild salmon are world renown for their superior fighting ability. There are trophy brook trout, world-record landlocked salmon, lake trout up to 40 pounds, northern pike to 25 pounds and whitefish up to seven pounds. These species constitute a natural renewable resource that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Big Game
There are three big game species found in Labrador; caribou, moose, and black bear. Caribou can be found in western, central, northern and parts of southeastern regions of Labrador. Moose and black bear are found throughout all of Labrador. Travellers may encounter any of these magnificent animals when visiting Labrador.
Small Game
Labrador's diverse ecology produces habitat for a variety of species. Small game animals found in Labrador include arctic hare, snowshoe hare, ruffled grouse, willow ptarmigan and spruce grouse. With the exception of the arctic hare, which is found primarily in the northern region, these species occur throughout Labrador.
Waterfowl
Labrador's pristine environment is home to a variety of water fowl that feed on the ocean during some or most of the year. As spring arrives thousands of birds gather along our coastlines to breed and during this time it's a bird watcher's paradise.
