Red Bay National Historic Site
Once-plentiful right and bowhead whales attracted 16th century whalers from the Basque region of Spain and France to the Strait of Belle Isle. A thriving industry for the production of whale oil developed along the Labrador coast. Whale oil was used for a variety of purposes, including lighting and manufacturing.Years of archival and archaeological research has revealed that Red Bay is the most complete and best preserved example of these ports.
