White Elephant Museum
Museums & Historic Places
This unusually named museum is a Moravian mission building, dating back to 1915. It was originally a boarding school, but it was soon decided that the mission house was big enough to house the school and dormitory as well. It was also easier to heat one building than two. This building then became the nursing clinic where it was quite common for the missionaries to pull the occasional tooth, dress wounds, and become midwives to deliver babies. Even in this capacity it still not get a great deal of use, and yet needed to be maintained. Hence the name ... White Elephant. It officially became a museum in 1996 and now houses a number of artifacts from the region.
